Understanding Home Care in Florida

Know the difference before you choose a provider.

Florida separates in-home providers into distinct categories, and each one is registered or licensed for different work. Understanding the difference protects your family — it tells you who is authorized to do what, and what you should expect to pay for.

That's us — AHCA #242034

Homemaker & Companion Services

Registered for non-medical support in the home: housekeeping, laundry, linens, meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, errands, household organization, appointment reminders, companionship, conversation, activities, outings, and escort to appointments. No hands-on care of the body, and no medical tasks of any kind.

A different, licensed provider

Home Health Agency

Licensed for hands-on personal care and skilled services — bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, feeding, transfers, medication administration, nursing, and therapy. If that's what's needed, a licensed home health agency or nurse registry is the correct provider, and we'll say so plainly.

Protection for your family

Why the line matters

A provider working outside its registration puts a client's safety and a family's finances at risk. We hold the line on scope for the same reason we document every service plan in writing: families deserve to know exactly what was authorized, what was delivered, and what it cost.

A companion may remind — never administer

A companion can say, "It's three o'clock — this is usually when you take your medication." A companion may not open a bottle, sort a pill organizer, hand over a dose, or track whether it was taken. That distinction is not a technicality; it is the line between companion services and licensed care.

Escort means company — not physical support

We accompany clients to appointments, worship, shopping, and outings, and we stay for company in the waiting room. We do not lift, steady, transfer, or physically support a person walking or getting in and out of a vehicle. Clients we escort must be able to move about safely on their own or with their own equipment.

Scope of Service

What a Florida homemaker & companion provider may not do.

Our registration authorizes non-medical homemaker and companion services only. We say this plainly so families know exactly what to expect — and so we can point you to the right provider when a need falls outside our scope.

  • Bathing, dressing, grooming, or toileting
  • Feeding or hands-on eating assistance
  • Lifting, transfers, or physical support with walking
  • Medication administration or medication management
  • Skilled nursing or any medical treatment
  • Physical, occupational, or speech therapy
  • Wound care, injections, or catheter care
  • Vital signs, health monitoring, or medical assessment

If hands-on personal care or skilled care is needed, a licensed home health agency or nurse registry is the appropriate provider. Our team is glad to explain the difference.

What is a Florida Homemaker & Companion Services provider?

A Florida registered Homemaker & Companion Services provider delivers non-medical support in the home — light housekeeping, laundry, meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, errands, appointment reminders, companionship, escort to appointments, and social engagement. Do you provide bathing, dressing, or medication administration?

A companion may offer a general reminder that it is time for an appointment or routine, but may not administer, prepare, set up, handle, or manage medication in any way. Medication management is outside our authorized scope.

Do your wellness visits include health monitoring?
