How to Talk to an Aging Parent About Accepting Help

6 min read·June 20, 2026·By Boca Raton Adult Day Care Center

When you tell a parent 'you need help,' they hear 'you can't take care of yourself anymore.' That is why these conversations go badly.

Reframe it. 'Help' is about you, not them: 'I worry about you when I'm at work — would you visit a day program a few days a week so I can focus?' Or about practical convenience: 'You hate cooking lunch — let's let someone else handle that.' Or about social life: 'You used to love being around people. There's a program nearby that does music and art.'

Visit together. A one-hour tour beats a one-hour argument. Most resistance evaporates when a parent sees a warm, dignified environment instead of imagining a sterile one.

Start small. One day a week. Three hours. Then four. The goal is a yes to today, not a yes to forever.
