The caregiver burnout checklist

Twelve questions family caregivers can answer honestly in two minutes — and a plain plan for what to do with the answer. Written by the team at a licensed Boca Raton adult day care center.

Check every statement that is true this month

Not "ever." This month. Burnout is measured by what the last four weeks actually looked like.

Your body

  • You have skipped or postponed your own medical or dental appointments.
  • You are sleeping fewer than six hours most nights, or waking to check on someone.
  • You are getting sick more often than you did a year ago.
  • You rely on caffeine, alcohol or food to get through the afternoon.

Your mind

  • You feel irritable or short-tempered with the person you are caring for.
  • You feel guilty when you are not with them.
  • You have stopped looking forward to anything on the calendar.
  • You cannot picture what next year looks like.

Your life outside caregiving

  • Work is slipping — late arrivals, missed deadlines, calls you cannot take.
  • You have declined the last three social invitations.
  • Family conversations now start with "someone has to watch Mom."
  • You have no plan for what happens if you get sick for a week.

What your score means

Boxes checkedWhat it usually means
0–2Manageable load. Put a backup plan in writing now, before you need one.
3–5Early burnout. Add one predictable block of relief every week and protect your own medical appointments.
6–8Sustained strain. Occasional help is no longer enough — you need a standing weekly schedule someone else covers.
9–12Crisis range. Call the Florida Elder Helpline at 1-800-963-5337 and talk to your own physician. Do not wait for a hospitalization to force the change.

Four things that actually help

  1. Make relief repeating, not occasional. The same days every week is easier for a person with memory changes and easier for you to plan around.
  2. Write the backup plan down. Medications, doctors, allergies, routines, and who to call — one page, on the refrigerator.
  3. Get screened for state programs. The Area Agency on Aging of Palm Beach/Treasure Coast screens families for respite assistance; 211 Palm Beach connects you to local supports.
  4. Protect your own health appointments. Caregivers who stop seeing their own doctors become the second patient.

Where adult day care fits

A licensed adult day care center covers the weekday daytime hours — meals, group activities, senior-appropriate exercise and supervision — and your loved one comes home at the end of the day. It is the least disruptive form of regular relief for most families, and it is what we do in Boca Raton.

Caregiver burnout questions

What is caregiver burnout?

Caregiver burnout is physical, emotional and mental exhaustion from sustained caregiving — usually building over months, not days. It commonly shows up as sleep loss, irritability, withdrawal from friends, neglected personal health, and guilt. It is a workload problem, not a character problem.

How many checked boxes should worry me?

Any three items across two of the sections is worth acting on. Six or more across all three sections usually means the current arrangement is no longer sustainable without regular scheduled relief.

What actually reduces caregiver burnout?

Predictable, scheduled relief beats occasional emergency help. Research and practice both point to a repeating weekly rhythm — the same days each week — plus a written backup plan, a shared medication and appointment list, and at least one other person who knows the routine well enough to take over.

Where can Palm Beach County caregivers get help?

The Area Agency on Aging of Palm Beach/Treasure Coast and the Florida Department of Elder Affairs Elder Helpline (1-800-963-5337) can screen you for state respite programs. 211 Palm Beach & Treasure Coast connects families to local supports. Adult day care centers provide daytime supervision so caregivers can work or rest.

How does adult day care fit into a burnout plan?

A licensed adult day care center covers the weekday daytime hours: meals, activities, supervision and companionship, with the person coming home at the end of the day. At Boca Raton Adult Daycare that runs $95 per day on a 3-day weekly minimum, or $85 per day on the 5-day monthly plan, with door-to-door rides within 8 driving miles.

Can I copy or share this checklist?
