Respite Care vs. Adult Day Care: What's the Difference?
Respite care is a category — any short-term break for the family caregiver. It can happen at home, in an assisted living facility for a weekend, or at a day program.
Adult day care is one specific form of respite — scheduled daytime hours (usually 9–5) at a center that provides meals, activities, supervision, and often transportation. It is the most affordable and most consistent form of respite for families where the senior lives at home.
Use adult day care when you need predictable daytime relief to work, sleep, or handle your own appointments. Use overnight or weekend respite when you need a true break or are traveling.
Many families combine both — Program A four days a week, plus an occasional weekend respite stay elsewhere.
