Hydration and Nutrition: The Two Quiet Drivers of Senior Health

4 min read·May 23, 2026·By Boca Raton Adult Day Care Center

Seniors lose the sensation of thirst, take medications that reduce appetite, and often eat alone. The result is two slow-motion crises: dehydration and protein deficiency.

Dehydration causes confusion, falls, UTIs, and constipation — and it is almost always the first thing checked when a senior 'suddenly seems different.' Aim for 6–8 cups of fluid daily, more in Florida summer. Water, broth, decaf tea, and watery fruits all count.

Protein protects muscle, balance, and immune function. Older adults need roughly 1.0–1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day — significantly more than the standard adult recommendation.

Family-style meals (which we serve at Program A) solve both problems at once: company, supervision, balanced plates, and full glasses.
